Badshahi Mosque is currently the fifth largest mosque in the world. This is the last Mughal monument built by Aurangzeb which is the center of attention in Pakistan. It attracts millions of tourists from Pakistan and abroad every year.

White marble with floral design on both the exterior and interior makes it different from other infrastructures. It is located in Lahore, Punjab, which can accommodate 10,000 worshipers inside the building and another 100,000 worshipers in the courtyard during Eid.

History of Badshahi Mosque

Badshahi Mosque is one of the few important architectural monuments built during the long reign of Emperor Aurangzeb from 1658 to 1707. It is currently the fifth largest mosque in the world and was undoubtedly the largest mosque in the world from 1673 to 1986.

Construction of the mosque began in 1671 on the instructions of Aurangzeb’s brother-in-law and Lahore Governor Muzaffar Hussain (Fidai Khan Koka). Much of it is inspired by Delhi’s Jama Masjid, which was built by Aurangzeb’s father, Shah Jahan. The Badshahi Mosque project is a square measuring 170 meters on each side.

The materials used in Mughal architecture depend on the construction and the nature of the area. In many other parts of Pakistan, many buildings made of less permanent materials could not survive. The distinguishing feature of Mughal architecture is the deep red hard rock.

The skyline of the mosque, lined with marble and red stone, adds to the beauty and splendor. Covered with marble, four of the eight majestic minarets, about 14 feet high, can be seen from afar. The main building of the mosque also has four additional minarets in each corner which further enhance the beauty of the mosque.

If we take a look at the construction of mosques in Pakistan, the majority of mosques in the country are a reflection of this magnificent historical landmark. Due to its historical significance, the government of Pakistan has listed the mosque as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Museum in Mosque

In the room above the main gate of the Badshahi Mosque, the Badshahi Mosque Museum houses the belongings of the Prophet Muhammad, which is also an attraction for Muslims. It has religious significance for Muslims and they are emotionally attached to it.

Tourist Attractions

Located in the historic city – Lahore, the Badshahi Mosque promises a wonderful experience for tourists. It has been a place of worship and one of the biggest attractions for tourists.

The charm of this mosque attracted many politicians and celebrities, including Diana, the Princess of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton, on visits to Pakistan.

The royal mosque built by the Mughals is a manifestation of Mughal architecture. For many years, Lahore, the “Mughal city of gardens”, has been the hub of South Asia. It is the 14th most popular country in the world due to its rich history.

The beauty of Lahore is not limited to Mughal buildings, but also includes many other infrastructures that make it unique from any other city.
