PayPal and Stripe coming to Pakistan? Latest Updates

Posted on September 27, 2023September 27, 2023 By Pakistan Analysis No Comments on PayPal and Stripe coming to Pakistan? Latest Updates

In a recent development, Interim Federal Minister for ICT, Dr. Omar Saif, confirmed that the Pakistani government is actively engaged in discussions with global payment giants PayPal and Stripe to offer their services to Pakistan.

The primary objective of this initiative is to support the country’s growing independent industry and boost the e-commerce sector.

Dr. Saif stressed the importance of bringing PayPal to Pakistan, especially for the benefit of the rapidly expanding freelancer community in the country.

The government’s strategy involves getting PayPal to provide services through an offshore entity in Pakistan, following the successful model used in Egypt. This approach would enable Pakistani freelancers to receive payments via PayPal, providing a seamless solution for the freelancer community.

The Ministry of ICT has already begun discussions with PayPal, seeking their cooperation in allowing Pakistani freelancers to repatriate their earnings to Pakistan through a one-way service. These discussions are scheduled to begin next week, representing a crucial step in expanding PayPal’s presence in Pakistan.

In addition to discussions with PayPal, the Pakistani government has also initiated talks with Stripe, another world-famous payment processing platform. These negotiations are being conducted through the Pakistani Embassy in Singapore.

If Stripe decides to launch its services in Pakistan, it could bring significant benefits to the booming e-commerce industry and provide content creators in Pakistan with new avenues of income.

The Minister expressed optimism about the outcome of these negotiations, citing a strong business case for both PayPal and Stripe to operate in Pakistan.

These discussions are expected to reach a conclusion in approximately two months, potentially opening up new opportunities for financial transactions and boosting the country’s digital economy.

In short, the Pakistani government, led by Dr. Omar Saif, is actively engaged in talks with PayPal and Stripe to bring their services to Pakistan. This initiative aims to support independent workers, enhance the e-commerce sector, and provide new financial opportunities in the country’s digital economy. Discussions are scheduled to begin soon, and the government is optimistic about reaching a positive outcome within the next two months.
